The line was singled to cross a swing bridge over the River Arun. The driver of the 9.30 p.m. Brighton to Portsmouth passenger train claimed not to have seen the stop signal as he and the fireman were attending to the locomotive fire. The guard’s view was obscured by smoke. They struck the side of the 9 p.m. Portsmouth to Brighton goods train which was leaving the single line section having just crossed the bridge.
