The 2.45 freight train from Neasden to Woodford was headed by a U.S. S160 engine no. 1707. There was only had a single water guage on this type of locomotive and it gave a faulty reading, leading to a boiler collapse when the boiler ran short of water. Unfortunately the driver and fireman did not carry out further tests which would have shown the fault and the true level of the water in the boiler. The families of neither victim received any compensation.
