The 19.55 freight train from Castle Bromwich, near Birmingham was travelling along the Down Goods line at about 30 m.p.h. under cleared signals, on its way to Ketton, Rutland, when it collided end-on with a stationary raft of 40 empty hopper iron ore wagons that were waiting to be shunted into a Down siding. Signaller error was to blame.
