The church of SS. Peter and Mary is a small building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and small wooden belfry at the west end containing one bell; there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1589. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge about \u00a3102, net income \u00a3114, with 2 acres glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Robert Baker M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Rector&#8217;s trust account, a sum of \u00a3117 in Consols, which produces \u00a33 10s. 2d. yearly, is for fuel for the poor of the parish. Salt Hill Park is the residence of the Right Hon. Sir Archibald Levin Smith P.C. Lord Justice of Appeal, who is the principal landowner. Maj-Gen. John Byron is lord of the manor. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 597 acres of land and 36 of water; rateable value, \u00a32088; the population in 1891 was 323.<\/p>\n<p>Parish Clerk, George Powell<\/p>\n<p>POST OFFICE &#8211; Miss Mercy Standing, sub-postmistress.
