Place Grantham
Date 19th September 1906, 11.00 p.m.
Railway Company Great Northern Railway
No. of Fatalities 14
Cause of Accident Excessive speed
Description The 8.45 pm London Kings Cross to Edinburgh express was due to stop at Grantham, but approached at such great speed that the engine jumped the points and most of the train ended up down an embankment. It has been suggested that the driver forget he was supposed to stop; or left it too late to apply the brakes after trying to make up lost time.
