Shrivenham Station One-Place Study

This study is about the railway station near Shrivenham. The station was open for almost 125 years;

  • opened on the 17th December 1840
  • closed to passengers on the 7th December 1964
  • finally closed to goods traffic on the 4th October 1965

Please see the timeline page for more events in the history of the station.

The railway line is still open, being part of the busy mainline from London Paddington to Bristol, South Wales and the West Country.

The site is situated about 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) south of the village of Shrivenham and easy to see from the road bridge over the tracks, as a number of buildings remain. It is currently in Oxfordshire but was in Berkshire until the 1972 reorganisation of the English and Welsh counties (governed by the Local Government Act 1972).

This study will primarilly look at:

  • History of the railway station
  • The Railway Staff who worked there
  • Railway Accidents
  • The role of the station during wartime
  • What remains at the site after the station closed

Please note that this study concerns the former railway station and should not be confused with the “Shrivenham Station” military establishment the other side of the village of Shrivenham.
