Details of the Fatal Accident

Place Bere Ferres, Devonshire, England
Date Monday 24th September 1917, 3.52 p.m.
Railway Company London and South Western Railway
No. of Fatalities 10
Cause of Accident Struck by train
Description Soldiers from two troopships of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force were being transported by train to Salisbury. The train made an unscheduled stop at Bere Ferres station and a number of the soldiers left the train on the side of the other track (mistakenly assuming that they would leave the train from the same side that they had boarded the train). The London Waterloo to Plymouth express train approached and the driver seeing the stationary train, sounded the whistle as a warning, but he did not see the men on the track owing to the curvature of the line. Nine of the victims died instantly and one died later his of injuries.
