From Kelly’s Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, 1867
RYPE (or RIPE, or Eckington) is a small village, 2 miles from Berwick station, 56 from London, 7 east from Lewes, and 6 west from Hailsham, in the Eastern division of the county, West Firle union, hundred of Shiplake, Lewes county court district and archdeaconry, Pevensey rape, diocese of Chichester, and rural deanery of Rype. The church of St. John the Baptist is a commodious structure, in the Middle Pointed Decorated style: the tower contains 5 bells; the chancel is of ample size. The register in this parish is very peculiar; it is written in Latin from 1520 to 1538, whence it begins as then ordered. The living is a rectory, value £431 per annum, with residence, in the gift of Exeter College, Oxford, and held by the Rev. Robert Shuttleworth Sutton, M.A., formerly a fellow of that college, rural dean. There is a National School in the village. The principal landowners are Alderman Sir James Duke, bart., and W.D. Weeden, Esq. Hall-Court, the seat of W.D. Weeden, Esq., is now occupied by M. Markwick, Esq. The area is 1,120 acres, and the population in 1861 was 631.
