From Kelly’s Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, 1867
BOGNOR is a market town and chapelry, 63 miles from London, 28 from Brighton, and 7 from Chichester, in the parish of South Bersted, Western division of the county, hundred of Aldwick, rape and county court district of Chichester, pleasantly situated near the peninsula of Selsey, and sheltered from the north winds by a chain of hills called the South Downs: it was made a market town by Act of Parliament in 1822, and owes its rise to Sir Richard Hotham, in 1785, prior to which it was but a small village, inhabited only by labourers and fishermen; but from the mildness and salubrity of the air, the eligibility of the extensive beach for bathing, and its extensive sea views, it has become a fashionable summer resort and watering-place. A pier has recently been constructed. The Episcopal chapel of St. John the Evangelist was erected by subscription in 1821. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £110, in the gift of the Archbishop or Canterbury, and held by the Rev. Edward Miller, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge. Her Majesty, when Princess Victoria, with her mother the late Duchess of Kent, resided here, at Bognor Lodge, during several summers. There are numerous lodging-houses, warm and cold baths, libraries, reading, subscription, and assembly rooms. The regulation of the town is under the superintendence of commissioners, appointed under the provisions of a local act: the principal streets are wide, paved, lighted by gas, and well watered. Here is a Jubilee school, founded by the late Princess Charlotte, for 50 girls, and an Infant school, supported by voluntary subscription. There are also an Independent chapel and a Wesleyan chapel. The Market-house was built by Mr. Richard Clark in 1822. The Owers Light is a vessel stationed 9 miles from the shore, to warn ships from the rocks. There are many objects of interest in the neighbourhood – Goodwood Park (the seat of the Duke of Richmond), race-course and grounds the Roman remains at Bignor, Petworth House and Park, Arundel Castle (the seat of the Duke of Norfolk), and Pagham Church. Bognor is the terminus of a short line of railway from Barnham.
SOUTH BERSTED is a parish, in the hundred of Aldwick, rape and county court district of Chichester, Sutton incorporation, 6 miles south-east from Chichester, and one mile north from Bognor, containing 2,750 acres. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is a plain edifice, with a tower surmounted by a spire. The living is a vicarage, commuted tithe rent-charge £400 per annum, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held by the Rev. Edward Eedle, M.A., of Christ Church, Oxford. There is a National School for boys. The soil is a rich loam. The population of this parish (which includes Bognor) in 1861 was 3,128.
