WEST GRINSTEAD is a parish and village, 6¾ miles south from Horsham, 8½ north from Steyning, 43 from London, in the Western division of the county, rape of Bramber, West Grinstead hundred, union and county court district of Horsham, and diocese and archdeaconry of Chichester, situated on the line of railway between Shoreham and Horsham, and on the turnpike road to Worthing. The river Adur, which is navigable for small vessels, runs through the parish. The church of St. George is an ancient building: it contains monuments to the Powlett, Burrell, and Caryll families, and a few fine old brasses. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, tithe rent charge £1,120, with 100 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held by the Rev. Thomas Wall Langshaw, B.A., of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Rev. John Goring, M.A. (lord of the manor), and Sir Percy Burrell, Bart., M.P. are owners of the land. There is a Church of England school, and a Roman Catholic chapel. The population in 1861 was 1,403, and the area is 6,658 acres.
