WEST HAMPNETT is a parish, giving name to a union, a mile and a half east from Chichester, and 60 miles from London, in the Western division of the county, Box and Stockbridge hundred, Chichester rape, county court district, diocese and archdeaconry, and rural deanery of Boxgrove. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £52, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Richmond, and held by the Rev. Robert Sutton, M.A., of Exeter College, 0xford. The spacious mansion house, formerly called West Hampnett Place, but now used as the Union House, is of ancient date: the house was probably built by Richard Sackville (uncle of Thomas, first Lord Buckhurst), and was converted to its present purpose by the late Duke of Richmond, whose property it is. West Hampnett union comprises the following parishes, viz.:- Aldingbourn, Appledram, Barnham, Binderton, Binsted, Birdham, Boxgrove, Donnington, Earnley, Eartham, East Dean, Eastergate, East Lavant, East Wittering, Felpham, Graffham, Hunston, Madehurst, Merston, Middleton, Mid Lavant, New Fishbourne, North Mundham, Oving, Pagham, Rumboldswyke, Selsey, Sidlesham, Singleton, Slindon, Tangmere, Upper Waltham, Walberton, West Hampnett, West Itchenor, West Stoke, West Wittering, and Yapton. The population of the parish in 1861 was 502, and the area is 1,899 acres, chiefly arable land.
WESTERTON, one mile north; MAUNDLING (Or Maudlin), half a mile east; WOODCOTE, one mile north, are hamlets of West Hampnett. WATERBEECH is a mile and a half north-east.
