BECKLEY is a parish, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Goldspur, union and county court district of Rye, rape of Hastings, diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, and rural deanery of Dallington, 6½ miles west-north-west from Rye. The church of All Saints consists of nave, aisles and chancel, with 3 small tower and spire containing 6 bells. The living is a rectory, annual value £850, with residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of University College, Oxford, and held by the Rev. William Hedley, M.A., formerly Fellow and Tutor of University College. Here is a National school; also a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The river Rother bounds this parish on the north, separating the county of Sussex from Kent. The area is 5,316 acres, and the population in 1861 was 1,252.
