EAST MARDEN is a parish, 8 miles north-west from Chichester, and 8 south-east from Petersfield, in the Western division of the county, Westbourne hundred and union, Chichester rape, county court district, diocese and archdeaconry, rural deanery of Boxgrove. This is one of the four Meredens referred to in ” Domesday Survey,” and returned as having been held of the Confessor by allodial tenure: after the Conquest this manor was given to Roger, Earl Montgomery: in the reign of Henry I. the prebend of East Marden was founded in Chichester Cathedral, and this manor was annexed to it, which, from time to time, has been leased by the prebendary for three lives: the present lessee is W. Leyland Woods Esq. The church is a handsome structure in the Early English style, and has been re-pewed, roofed, and otherwise repaired. The register commences in 1691. The living is a vicarage, value £162 per annum, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held by the Rev. Charles Philip Lyne, M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. Here is a Parochial school for boys and girls. The area is 968 acres, and the population in 1861 was 63. – Letters through Petersfield. The nearest money order office is at Midhurst.
