NORTH CHAPEL is a village and parish, in the Western division of the county, union of Midhurst, county court district of Petworth, rape of Arundel, hundred of Rotherbridge, distant 5 miles north from Petworth, on the road to London, upon a gentle declivity, commanding a good view of the Downs of Surrey and Sussex. The church of St. Michael is a plain building, and has at the west end a tower with a clock. The register dates from 1716. The living is a rectory, yearly value £284, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held by the Rev. Robert Witherby, M.A., of St John’s College, Cambridge; the Rev. Cator Chamberlain is curate. There are two almshouses, and a neat Sunday school room, built in 1835, and endowed by Lord Leconfield, at the expense and by the direction of the late Earl of Egremont. Lord Leconfield (lord of the manor) and George Baker, Esq., are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, with subsoil of same. The chief crops are wheat, oats, and pasture. The area is 3,854 acres, and the population in 1861 was 785.
